To stay around a bit longer (a.k.a. “idle”) you might like a desktop client, some good ones:
- Quassel and Smuxi - good general GUI clients, any OS
- Hexchat or mIRC, both for windows
- Pidgin or InstantBird, (multi-IM clients) any OS
- Empathy (gnome), Konversation (KDE) and Thunderbird have IRC clients built in
- Qolloquy - OS X
